Castello Rosso Castle

Castello Rosso is a castle located on Meis Island. It is also associated with the Knights of Saint John. The existence of this castle dates back to the 14th century. Built on top of a red rock, the fortress overlooks the harbor.

“Kastello” derives from the Italian word “castello,” meaning “castle.”

The second part of the name comes from the Italian word “rosso,” meaning “red.” It may refer to the reddish color of the island’s rocks, the reddish hue of the castle at sunset, or the color of the coat of arms of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, Juan Fernández de Heredia, displayed above the castle gate.
