In the “Megisti–Kaş Swim Race” held between Meis Island of Greece and the Kaş district of Antalya, 175 participants — ranging from national swimmers to diplomats, businesspeople, and bureaucrats — swam in the name of friendship and peace.
Organized every year at the end of the International Lycian Kaş Culture and Arts Festival, the Megisti–Kaş Swim Race is the only swimming competition in the world held between two countries.
The race is also considered an important symbol of friendship between Greece and Turkey. Swimmers departed from Kaş by ferry at 07:30 yesterday and arrived at Meis Island, entering the water at 08:30. The race was officially started by the Mayor of Meis, Nikolaos Asvestis. Italian athlete Egor Tropeano was the first to complete the 7-kilometer course.
