Meis Island Begins the 2026 Tourism Season with Record-Breaking Interest

Meis Island Begins the 2026 Tourism Season with Record-Breaking Interest:

Demand on the Kaş–Meis Route Continues to Rise

Meis Island (Kastellorizo), one of the Mediterranean’s smallest yet most popular destinations, has made a strong start to the 2026 tourism season.

Bookings for day trips departing from Kaş have increased by 30% compared with last year, making the island one of the most notable micro-destinations of 2026.

Tourism officials expect a significant increase in visitor numbers, particularly at the Blue Cave, Mandraki Bay and the harbour area, between April and October 2026.

43,291 Passengers Travelled from Kaş to Meis Island in the Summer of 2025

When passenger numbers are examined by island, Kos was the leading choice among Turkish tourists. A total of 347,302 passengers travelled from Bodrum to Kos. Chios ranked as the second most visited destination after Kos, receiving 192,333 passengers from Çeşme.

A total of 167,888 passengers travelled from Marmaris to Rhodes, while a further 52,981 travelled there from Fethiye. Lesbos welcomed 127,963 passengers from Ayvalık, 13,537 from Dikili and 3,554 from İzmir. Samos received 118,871 visitors from Kuşadası and 30,414 from Çeşme.

Meanwhile, 43,291 passengers travelled from Kaş to Meis Island, 18,550 from Bodrum to Leros and 2,788 from Kuşadası to Patmos.

Meis Island in 2026: Why Has This Tiny Paradise Opposite Kaş Become So Popular?

As 2026 gets underway, Meis Island is once again in the spotlight. Located directly opposite Kaş and accessible by a ferry journey of just 20 minutes, this tiny island is experiencing an extraordinary surge in popularity during the 2026 season.

The 2026 tourism season has seen Turkish tourists’ interest in the Greek islands reach an all-time high. Thanks particularly to simplified visa procedures, convenient short-distance transport links and the value they offer compared with other international holiday destinations, the Greek islands have become some of the most attractive destinations for travellers departing from Türkiye. While both large and small islands have experienced strong demand during this period, a notable shift has also taken place in tourism trends.

One of the most striking examples of this change is Meis Island. Thanks to daily ferry services departing from the Turkish coastal town of Kaş, Meis experienced a remarkable influx of visitors in the summer of 2026. Despite its limited size and capacity, the island has gained enough popularity to compete with much larger destinations by offering an authentic atmosphere, tranquillity and an experience that feels “close yet completely different.” This development has brought the concept of the “micro-destination” back into focus within the tourism industry.

Meanwhile, larger and more developed islands such as Kos and Chios have continued to attract considerable demand. With their extensive accommodation options, nightlife, diverse beaches and cultural activities, these islands remain among the leading choices for Turkish tourists planning longer holidays. What is particularly noteworthy, however, is that travellers are no longer interested only in large and well-known destinations. They are increasingly turning to smaller islands that offer more intimate, discovery-focused experiences.

Several important factors lie behind this trend. First, in the post-pandemic period, travellers have increasingly sought distinctive experiences in quieter, less crowded and more secluded locations, bringing micro-destinations to the forefront. Second, the influence of social media is helping “undiscovered” or lesser-known places gain popularity rapidly. With their visually appealing streets, colourful houses and natural beauty, small islands such as Meis frequently feature in viral content on platforms including Instagram and TikTok. This directly increases demand.

Ease of access has also played a crucial role in this rise. Short and convenient routes such as the Kaş–Meis ferry connection become particularly attractive when combined with straightforward passport procedures and the convenience of day trips. Similarly, the Çeşme–Chios and Bodrum–Kos routes have reached record levels in terms of passenger traffic.

The 2026 season clearly demonstrates that a new era has begun in Mediterranean tourism. Travel is no longer centred solely on large hotels, extended holidays and traditional routes. Shorter, experience-led and discovery-focused trips are now becoming increasingly prominent. Thanks to their authenticity and accessibility, micro-destinations are at the heart of this emerging trend.

This tendency is expected to grow even stronger in the coming years. Alongside the Greek islands situated close to Türkiye, other small Mediterranean destinations with similar characteristics are also predicted to gain popularity. From the tourism industry’s perspective, this presents an opportunity for a more sustainable and balanced distribution of visitors. As pressure on major destinations decreases, smaller communities can benefit from renewed economic activity.

In conclusion, the summer of 2026 stands out not only as a busy tourism season but also as a turning point in changing travel habits. As the example of Meis Island demonstrates, small yet captivating destinations are now sharing the stage with major tourism centres and can occasionally even surpass them in popularity. This suggests that the future of Mediterranean tourism will be more diverse, more balanced and increasingly centred on exploration.
