Meis gained international recognition after the filming of the 1991 Italian Academy Award–winning movie Mediterraneo.
A large part of this cult classic was filmed on Meis Island. The story follows a group of Italian soldiers who arrive on the island during World War II and gradually forget the absurdity of war in the magical atmosphere of this small Mediterranean island. The film reflects the spirit of Meis so vividly that it helped introduce the island to audiences worldwide. Today, the garden of Ta Platania Restaurant is one of the filming locations featured in the movie. While walking around the island, it is almost impossible not to recall scenes from the film when passing by this restaurant.
